The author of this blog has every right to recommend the anime that they feel is of importance and helped them understand anime and Japanese culture – even if the anime they shared is westernized – so what? I agree with many things on the list. Anime is hard to get into sometimes. I introduced my husband to anime with Sailor Moon, he liked it – thought it was funny and quirky. I would have never gotten into anime if it had not been the westernized airing of Sailor Moon when I was a child (bad voicing or not, lol)

Anime has it’s own genres as well and not everyone will like the above mentioned pieces but it will give you a good idea about anime. For instance I like shojo and bishojo anime and I hate mech. It’s just my personal preference and everyone has their own.

PS RDS – I didn’t like AIR all that much – I like Kanon much more. I never played either game though, just watched the anime. [/my opinion]

I’m glad that you’re job as a video rental clerk gives you the opportunity to recommend much better anime to the adult public.

Hmmm…., which show are you talking about?… mmmm …. oh! I know! it’s “Sex in the City”, right? No? … mmmmm …. “South Park”? No, they are obsessed with toilets, not with sex… mmmm …. Aha! – “Battlestar Galactica”!

As for your, guys, pathetic “recommended list” – anime-on-US-tv-staple plus a-must-see-Miyazaki…. – that is exactly what turn people off trying anime. Exept for Miyazaki, those are exactly what they always see when they click on an anime program on US TV… plus a huge dose of edited magical girls and giant robots.

If there is anyone out here who needs an advice as to which anime to try – throw away the above “recommendations”.

Try something like “Air” (TV series, 2005). Subtitled. In my personal experience works 100% (6 out of 6). (Grownup) people, returning disks, were saying “you know, I’ve never in my life …” and “you won’t believe, but I cried…” (that’s from guys) and “It’s totally not what they show on TV!”

Not that they were transformed into anime fans, but now they know that anime is much more than they had thought it is. And they are open to try some more.
